Hey Friend!

It's been a weird and topsy-turvy week for me professionally. I've been using these slower summer days to prioritize personal connections as much as possible. If you're in Connecticut (or close-ish), you're invited to join my August Coffee & Ice Cream Challenge! Not local? Let's Walk & Talk.

This is the sixth of six installments about Reloveution and how we can support you and your team in the second half of the year (and beyond). Today, I'm going to share more about our burnout prevention and professional well-being services. Read on for an overview, a story, some testimonials, and a few tips and tricks. Be sure to scroll down to the end for a special resource and offer!

What is Burnout? Why Should We Care?

Burnout is the profound and often debilitating physical and/or emotional exhaustion that humans might experience as a result of chronic stress that has not been successfully managed or healed.

The bad news? 90% of nonprofit professionals are concerned about burnout, and more than 60% of all American employees are actively experiencing burnout.

This isn't just alarming; it's an existential crisis.

If we don't take intentional steps to manage our individual and collective stress, it wreaks havoc on our and our people's bodies, brains, and souls. And the longer we go without doing something--anything--the longer it takes to heal and the harder it is to "fix".

We can't just wait until next quarter, until our kids are older, until we hire that new person, or until there's a new administration. We also can't just get a massage or slap some lavender on our pillows and call it a day.

The good news? Solving the burnout epidemic isn't rocket science, and Reloveution can help.

Services Overview: Burnout Prevention & Professional Well-Being

At Reloveution, we know that burnout isn’t just an individual issue; it’s a systemic and cultural issue. And it's an issue that requires more than Band-Aids and painkillers.

We believe in identifying and transforming the root causes of burnout in organizations and actively cultivating cultures of well-being.

We also believe that when people are at their most burnt out, they need more tools than bubble baths and long walks; they need practical tools, resources, and support for regulating, healing, and building a more sustainable future.

Whether we're working with individuals, teams, or organizations, we help identify what's fueling burnout, establish practices for collective sustainability, and support the implementation of systems that prioritize people and performance, without sacrificing one for the other.

Burnout Prevention Story

A global nonprofit came to us with concerns about the well-being of their team, suspecting burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, particularly among their frontline service workers. We completed our Burnout & Well-Being Diagnostic across the entire organization and confirmed their suspicions:

  • 40% of their team (not just frontline workers) was at high risk of or experiencing burnout, and another 20% were at medium risk of burnout.
  • Over 75% of the organization reported experiencing unpleasant emotions, such as exhaustion, frustration, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and impatience, almost every day.
  • Only 8% of the organization reported regularly feeling "calm" or "joyful" in their work.

The team at highest risk? The marketing and communications division.

The group at highest risk? People who had been with the organization for more than two years

And the main drivers of burnout?

  • Unreasonable time pressure
  • Poor communication from leadership and managers
  • Lack of role clarity
  • A repeated need to push against broken systems without progress

Reloveution partnered with the leadership team to implement a one-year initiative including:

  • Making on-demand well-being coaching available to every staff member regardless of title (there was an 80% usage rate in the first month)
  • Running a series of workshops for all staff on what burnout is, how it shows up, and what to do about it, AND how to cultivate professional well-being
  • Running a series of workshops for leaders and managers on how to support team members who may be experiencing burnout, and how to address the cultural and systemic drivers of burnout
  • Providing specialized support around vicarious trauma to the marketing and communications team
  • Working with the leadership team to shift and design new systems and cultivate an organizational culture of well-being for all.

In one year:

  • 75% of staff booked three or more well-being coaching sessions; 93% of staff used the service at least once
  • 85% of leaders reported higher confidence in being able to support their direct reports through their stress
  • 27% of staff reported being at high or medium risk for burnout (down from 60%)
  • Over 50% of the organization reported regularly feeling "calm" or "joyful" in their work (up from 8%).
  • 55% of the organization reported feeling unpleasant emotions like exhaustion, frustration, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and impatience almost every day (down from 77%)

And here’s the kicker:

The entire initiative cost less than $50,000.

That’s less than a third of what it would cost to replace just one burned-out employee.

This organization chose to invest in care, capacity, and culture, and shows us that when we have the data on what's happening and why, we can pull the right levers to effect real, sustainable change.

Investing in professional and organizational well-being isn't a luxury; it's a strategic approach. And the results speak for themselves.

Testimonials

"I had been feeling lost and overwhelmed in life. I wasn't quite sure what needed to change, but I knew something had to give. This experience was incredibly helpful in guiding me to determine what changes I need to make both professionally and personally. I felt empowered to begin making the necessary changes in my life to bring me to where I want to be.
It is hard work, but it is incredibly important work. It is worth investing in an intentional and dedicated time and space for genuine self-care. I would recommend this experience without hesitation to anyone experiencing feelings of self-doubt, burnout, and turmoil, as well as anyone genuinely passionate about growing and stretching themselves."
- Chelsea Hernandez, Senior Director
"I entered this program with no idea how to support my teammates through their burnout, and left with concrete tools, resources, and ideas for not only preventing burnout but also cultivating professional wellbeing on my team. This isn't rocket science, but it's helpful to know it IS science and we can do something about it."
- Sally D, Managing Partner

7 Shifts for Preventing Burnout in Organizations

  1. Recognize that burnout is a workplace hazard and not just an individual experience. Treat burnout as an occupational health issue, not a personal failure. When we name it as systemic, we can begin addressing the root causes rather than just managing symptoms.
  2. Measure and solicit feedback on how burnout and compassion fatigue are showing up for individuals and teams. Utilize tools such as anonymous surveys, focus groups, or burnout diagnostics to gather real data. You can’t change what you can’t see, and regular check-ins help you stay responsive over time.
  3. Build awareness and educate staff and managers. Offer learning experiences that explore what burnout is, what drives it, and what can be done about it at multiple levels. Transparency about why this work matters and where you’re headed helps build trust and shared ownership.
  4. Reduce Demands. Audit workload, meeting culture, time expectations, and emotional labor to identify unsustainable practices. Removing even one unnecessary pressure point can improve capacity and morale.
  5. Increase Resources (ideally without increasing demands). Provide access to coaching, rest, wellness stipends, or more strategic team support without tying those resources to new responsibilities. More support only works if it doesn’t come with more pressure.
  6. Shift Management/Leadership Behaviors. Train and coach managers to lead with emotional intelligence, clarity, and care. Because burnout prevention starts with how leaders hold space, communicate expectations, and model boundaries.
  7. Shift Culture and Systems. Reimagine how your policies, practices, and values show up in everyday operations. Sustainable change requires embedding well-being into the culture, not just creating short-term fixes.
